Wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction of some good cold reading material (sites, books, audio etc) as am personally very interested in it and would like to try using it more in my daygame.
Cheers

Hi Viscount,

There is a set cold read that you can just say to people, it's the classic cold read and it applies to most people as it really just describes the human condition. I'm sure you can find it on google.

However, the real key to actual cold reading, where you actually can predict things about people without knowing them for long, is experience. You need to understand yourself, and you need to talk to lots of people and dig into their fears and anxieties, find out what makes them tick.

This is extremely useful for calibration and forming deep connections with people, and eventually for 'seeing the social matrix'. Other cold reading stuff is just a trick and it will inevitably backfire in the end.

In summary, talk to lots of people, and really take an interest in their lives. Pretty soon you'll be naturally cold reading people all over the place.

Best of luck!!!

Rumba - Thanks for that link, hadnt seen that one will give it a go.

Alex - Cheers for the advice, I was watching a bit of Derren Brown cold reading people, looking at the way they dress, body language, confidence etc and wondered if there was any resources that people used. I also saw the one where he pulls apart Joe Power the "man who contacts the dead" which was very interesting and used "typical" cold reading techniques -ie Barnum statements ("You're having problems with a friend or relative.").

Just all peaked my interest and thought of how using it in game may be interesting.

Thanks both for your replies!

Cheers

V

Cold reads are exactly that. True cold reads are the sort you see dramatised in Hollywood films, such as when the hero says "Yes, I could tell you were'nt a mechanic, as your hands were'nt rough, and you said you'd been ill but you had a tan" type comments.
Barnum statements as you mentioned are generalisations ie: "You are a very social person, but sometimes you don't feel like talking to people and go into your shell", which is what happens to everyone at some point, but when you say it to a person it triggers a subconcious feeling, as if to say "He knows me so well!"

Thanks Metal Mike, funnily enough it was after watching Derren Brown debunking a medium, Joe Powers, that made me think of how effective a tool it could be.

And have finally found a decent book on the subject http://www.thecoldreadingbook.com/
recommended by Pen and Teller and Derren Brown to name a few! Buy it direct as amazon charges an extra ?20 per book!!!

Cheers guys!

..strangely, someone at work is planning to go and see one of these "Mediums". I spent 15 minutes today trying to explain how it's a fraud! (still think she'll go though! :-\).
As I said it's a great book on the subject, but I'd avoid going into cold reads too deeply with regard to pickup. If you're not carefull you can go down the same route as guys used to do when they read "The Game" and thought "Yeah, learn some magic like Mystery, and I'm a babe magnet!!". Unfortunatly, you just get pegged as an entertainer or dancing monkey, and once you've exhausted all your material, her interest drops and it's an uphill struggle. Better to understand the subject, touch upon it but then move on to other shared interests. As Yad mentioned in one of the podcasts, girls like variety and will get bored even if your talking about something they love, all the time.

Hey Rumba - I totally agree! Certainly dont want to head down the gimmicky route, am more interested out of curiosity and using it in daily interactions, sales and coaching (but not in an unethical way!) lol. And I have a friend who completely buys into the medium thing and cannot believes that the undead are telling her her future rather than psychology. The funny thing is that the Fox sisters started the whole spiritualism movement in the 18th Century and then publicly confessed that the whole thing was a hoax but by then mediums were everywhere and people believed the lie more than the truth. Fascinating stuff!

Law Gypsy - hey thanks for that, am developing my NLP knowledge and SMEAC is certainly something that am enjoying learning about! Cheers for the suggestions!

Cheers guys!
